What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a partnership between you and a professional that helps you better understand your feelings, thoughts and behaviour as well as helps you can make changes as necessary. Psychotherapy can also help you gain a better understanding of the situations you have faced, the choices you have made in your life and how they have brought you to where you are now. It is my belief that a greater understanding of your feelings, thoughts and behaviour, the choices you have made in your life and the reasons behind those choices can assist you in making healthier and more productive choices as you move forward.

People often seek psychotherapy for the following reasons:

  • They feel overwhelmed, helpless and lack hope
  • They are struggling with issues related to depression, anxiety, panic, loss and grief
  • They feel stressed and their typical coping strategies are no longer working
  • They feel they cannot confide in friends and family about their problems
  • Their problems make day to day functioning (at work or home) difficult
  • They feel like they cannot manage alone and have nowhere else to turn
  • Alarming new problems have occurred in their lives

My belief is that the foundation of psychotherapy lies in the relationship between my clients and me. I strive to provide a respectful, supportive, compassionate environment for my clients so they can feel safe to discuss the issues that are upsetting or bothering them. I maintain a health-oriented approach, working with clients to maximize their potential. My treatment services are individualized to address each client's difficulties and personality style, keeping in mind the context in which they live their lives. In addition to a basic compassionate, client-centred approach, I draw from a broad range of therapeutic techniques including:

  • Cognitive Behavioural (CBT)
  • Insight-Oriented
  • Interpersonal
  • Humanistic
  • Supportive Therapy
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

I strive to increase clients’ awareness of their strengths and difficulties, the underlying reasons behind their behaviour and decisions, and the obstacles that may prevent them from making positive changes in their lives to allow them to cope better. Call today to learn more.

Please note, I do not provide family therapy, couples therapy, or substance abuse counselling. I do not do hypnosis.
